Discovering Fiano: McLaren Vale’s Newest White Wine Star

If you love exploring new wines, Fiano might just become your new summer wine companion. It’s an “alternative varietal” that’s quietly making waves, especially here in McLaren Vale, where it works in harmony with the maritime Mediterranean climate, making it a great fit for organic and sustainable growers like Battle of Bosworth.

Where Does Fiano Come From?

Hailing from the Campania region in southern Italy, where it’s been grown for centuries, around Naples and the Amalfi Coast. In Italy, it’s celebrated for producing fresh yet textural wines that pair beautifully with the region’s seafood-rich cuisine.

More recently, it has found a second home in McLaren Vale, with a handful of growers selecting new varietals that grow in harmony with the maritime Mediterranean climate. Our vineyard in Willunga, situated in the shadow of the Mt Lofty Ranges, enjoys the warm, dry summers and cooling coastal breezes that help the Fiano ripen beautifully, while still retaining its fresh, vibrant acidity.

The taste of an Italian Summer

Joch was attracted to Fiano because it blurs the lines between crisp acidity and more textured white wines. It also has the ability to age, adding tertiary characteristics.  So we sacrificed some Cabernet to convert our Dam Block on Gaffney Road to Fiano in 2023.

Here are some of the hallmark characteristics:

  • Texture: Unlike very lean whites, Fiano is gentle, fresh, textured and mid-weight, often with a little waxy or nutty edge that makes it more interesting.
  • Acidity: Bright and zesty, but not razor-sharp—making it easy to drink and food-friendly.
  • Aromas & Flavours: Think fresh pear, citrus, pineapple and a hint of anise.

If You Love This, Try Fiano

One of the easiest ways to understand a new varietal is to compare it to something you already know and love. So, if your go-to is:

  • Sauvignon Blanc → You’ll enjoy Fiano’s crisp citrus lift, but with a rounder, less overtly grassy vibe.
  • Chardonnay (especially unoaked styles) → Fiano delivers texture and subtle nutty notes without the heaviness of oak.
  • Pinot Grigio → If you like refreshing whites, Fiano offers that same drinkability but with a little more flavour complexity.

Perfect Pairings for Spring & Summer

Built for warm-weather dining, Fiano’s balance of freshness and texture makes it super versatile with food. Try pairing it with:

  • Freshly shucked oysters or grilled prawns.
  • Zesty salads with citrus, fennel, or fresh herbs.
  • Lighter pastas—think lemon and olive oil with seafood.
  • Soft cheeses like burrata or fresh mozzarella.
  • Or simply pour a glass on the deck with some sunshine and good company.
